Top ranked Guandong Tigers (26-5) recorded its fifth loss in Taiyuan on Sunday night. Visitors were defeated by fourth ranked Shanxi Zhongyu (18-12) 128-121. It ended at the same time the 13-game winning streak of Guandong Tigers. The hosts were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. Shanxi Zhongyu made 39-of-48 free shots (81.3 percent) during the game, while Guandong Tigers only scored seventeen points from the stripe. Shanxi Zhongyu forced 23 Guandong Tigers turnovers. Strangely Guandong Tigers outrebounded Shanxi Zhongyu 39-25 including 24 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Shanxi Zhongyu made 9 blocks. 31 personal fouls committed by Guandong Tigers helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was American forward Charles Gaines (201-81, college: S.Mississippi) who had a double-double by scoring 32 points and 14 rebounds. His fellow American import swingman Marcus Williams (201-86, college: Arizona, agency: Interperformances) chipped in 40 points (!!!). At the other side the best for losing team was international forward FangYu Zhu (201-83) who recorded 38 points (!!!) and American point guard Aaron Brooks (183-85, college: Oregon) added 25 points respectively. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Shanxi Zhongyu maintains fourth place with 18-12 record. Guandong Tigers at the other side still keep top position with five games lost. Shanxi Zhongyu are looking forward to face higher ranked DongGuan Leopards (#3) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Guandong Tigers will play against Bayi Fubang in Ningbo and are hoping to win this game.
