No shocking result in a game when second ranked Cape Breton (12-5) crushed 5th ranked St.Francis Xavier (8-9) in Sydney 84-56 on Wednesday. The game was mostly controlled by Cape Breton. St.Francis Xavier was better in second period 19-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Cape Breton made 21-of-25 free shots (84.0 percent) during the game. They also forced 24 St.Francis Xavier turnovers and outrebounded them 47-32 including a 22-9 advantage in offensive rebounds. It was a good game for American guard Cassie Cooke (175-91, college: Mt.St.Marys) who led her team to a victory with 30 points and 4 assists (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line). Forward Stephanie Toxopeus (191) contributed with 9 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks for the winners. Cape Breton's coach Fabian McKenzie felt very confident using 10 players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Forward Donisha Young (180) answered with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 13 rebounds and guard Vanessa Pickard (180-92) added 9 points, 7 assists and 4 steals in the effort for St.Francis Xavier. The victory was the ninth consecutive win for Cape Breton. They maintain second place with 12-5 record having nine points less than leader Windsor. Loser St.Francis Xavier keeps the fifth position with nine games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
