Regular Season Round 16: Hokkaido L. - Aishin SH 79-80

Sixth-ranked Hokkaido L. (14-18) used its home court advantage to challenge second ranked Aishin Sea Horses (23-9) in Saporro. The visitors from Kariya managed to secure only one-point victory 80-79. However their fans expected much easier game. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Hokkaido L.. It looked good early as Hokkaido L. took an 3-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Aishin Sea Horses had a 16-10 second period charge getting the lead and Hokkaido L. was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 79-80. Aishin Sea Horses made 17-of-22 charity shots (77.3 percent) during the game. It was a great shooting night for Aishin Sea Horses especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 64.7 percentage. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international power forward J.R. Sakuragi (206-76, college: UCLA) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 16 points and 12 rebounds and international swingman Takatoshi Furukawa (190-87) who added 19 points during the contest. At the losing side German power forward Tilo Klette (206-77) responded with 13 points and 8 rebounds and the former international guard Takehiko Orimo (190-70) scored 18 points. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Defending champion keeps a position of league leader, which they share with Toyota Alvark. Hokkaido L. at the other side keeps the sixth place with 18 games lost. Aishin Sea Horses will play against Tochigi Brex (#5) on the road in the next round. Hokkaido L. will play against Mitsubishi Dolphins in Nagoya and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
