Fifth-ranked Santo Andre (9-7) used its home court advantage to challenge leader Americana (14-0) on Saturday. The visitors from Vila Medon managed to secure only one-point victory 67-66. However their fans expected much easier game. Santo Andre was trailing by 2 points at halftime but managed to get 12-point lead after three quarters before a 21-9 charge of Americana, which allowed them to tie the game at the end of regular time. They were better in overtime eventually winning that period 8-7. Americana forced 26 Santo Andre turnovers. Santo Andre was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a good game for the former international guard Karla Martins (172-78) who saved her team from a defeat with 21 points and 6 rebounds. American forward Sandora Irvin (191-82, college: TCU) contributed with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Americana's coach Luiz Augusto Zanon used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Swingman Ariadna Felipe (179-83) answered with a double-double by scoring 11 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists and international forward Micaela Martins (180-79, agency: Josep and Nicolas) added 15 points in the effort for Santo Andre. Four Santo Andre players scored in double figures. Americana have an impressive series of fourteen victories in a row. They maintain first place with 14-0 record. Defending champion Santo Andre dropped to the fourth position with seven games lost. Americana will face Poty/Acucar (#3) in Caranduva in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Santo Andre will play on the road against Blumenau.
