There was a surprise result when tenth ranked Valencia Basket (11-10) won against on the road 4th placed Unicaja Malaga (13-8) 68-58 on Sunday. The guests trailed by 9 points after first quarter, but they rallied back and won the game by 10 points. Unicaja Malaga was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a good game for French guard Nando De Colo (202-87) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 11 rebounds. American forward Niklas Caner-Medley (203-83, college: Maryland, agency: Beo Basket) contributed with 11 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. The former international power forward Jorge Garbajosa (205-77, agency: Interperformances) answered with 13 points and 6 rebounds and British forward Joel Freeland (208-87) added 17 points in the effort for Unicaja Malaga. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Valencia Basket moved-up to sixth place, which they share with 3 other teams. Loser Unicaja Malaga keeps the fourth position with eight games lost. Valencia Basket will face higher ranked Caja Laboral (#3) in Vitoria in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Unicaja Malaga will play on the road against CAI Zaragoza.
