Regular Season Round 18: Maccabi T-A - Maccabi Haifa 87-81

Leader Maccabi T-A delivered the fourteenth victory on Sunday night. This time they beat 11th ranked Maccabi Haifa (3-14) 87-81 in Tel-Aviv. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 26-22. But Maccabi Haifa won second period 22-20. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Maccabi T-A won last quarter 23-19. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. American swingman Keith Langford (193-83, college: Kansas) scored 17 points and 5 assists to lead the charge for the winners and the former international forward David Blu (201-80, college: USC) chipped in 12 points and 8 rebounds during the contest. Maccabi T-A's coach David Blatt used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was American forward Jeremis Smith (203-86, college: Georgia Tech) with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line) and his fellow American import forward Tyler Wilkerson (202-88, college: Marshall) scored 14 points and 8 rebounds. Four Maccabi T-A and five Maccabi Haifa players scored in double figures. Defending champion maintains first position with 14-2 record. Maccabi Haifa lost eleventh consecutive game. They stay at the bottom place with 14 games lost. Maccabi T-A will meet Hapoel Holon (#3) on the road in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Maccabi Haifa will play against Hapoel J-M (#6) in Jerusalem and hope to secure a win.
