Regular Season Round 15: Gaiteros - Marinos 96-92

The most surprising game was a loss of top-ranked Marinos (14-2) in Maracaibo on Wednesday night. Visitors were defeated by seventh ranked Gaiteros (6-10) 96-92. It ended at the same time the eight-game winning streak of Marinos. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 34-18. But Marinos won third quarter 33-16. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Gaiteros won last quarter 20-17. They held Marinos to an opponent 0.0 percent shooting from the field compared to 0.0 percent accuracy of the winners. Gaiteros looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. It was a great evening for American point guard Donald Sims (185-87, college: Appalachian St.) who led his team to a victory scoring 31 points. His fellow American import power forward Torraye Braggs (203-76, college: Xavier) helped adding 14 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Four Gaiteros players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was American forward Leon Rodgers (199-80, college: N.Illinois) with 26 points and the former international point guard Gregory Vargas (182-86) scored 19 points. Marinos' coach Jorge Arrieta tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Gaiteros maintains seventh place with 6-10 record. Marinos at the other side still keep top position with two games lost. Gaiteros are looking forward to face league's second-placed Cocodrilos in Caracas in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Marinos will play on the road against Guaros in Barquisimeto and are hoping to win this game.
