Regular Season Round 18: Gigantes - Marinos 93-81

Round 18 in LPB means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Puerto Ordaz where host Gigantes (10-6) beat league's leader Marinos (15-3) 93-81 on Wednesday evening. The game was mostly controlled by Gigantes. Marinos managed to win third quarter 24-21. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Gigantes held Marinos to an opponent 0.0 percent shooting from the field compared to 0.0 percent accuracy of the winners. The best player for the winners was American swingman Blake Walker (197-82, college: Portland St.) who scored 23 points. American-Mexican point guard Paul Stoll (178-85) chipped in 17 points, 9 assists and 8 steals. Five Gigantes players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was the former international swingman Jose Vargas (196-82) who recorded 19 points and 5 blocks and American forward Leon Rodgers (199-80, college: N.Illinois) added 17 points respectively. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Gigantes moved-up to third place. Marinos at the other side dropped to the second position with three games lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Cocodrilos. Marinos will play next round against Guaros trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Gigantes will try to continue on its current victory against fourth ranked Trotamundos in Valencia.
