Regular Season Round 19: Haukar - Valur 97-74

Bottom-ranked Valur (0-19) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 97-74 loss to eleventh ranked Haukar (5-14) in Hafnarfjordur. The game was mostly controlled by Haukar. Valur was better in fourth quarter 27-23. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 29 assists. Haukar brought some defensive toughness making 10 blocks. It was an exceptional evening for American guard Chavis Holmes (193, college: VMI) who led the winners and scored 27 points and 6 assists. His fellow American import forward Christopher Smith (198-82, college: St.Edward's) accounted for 22 points, 9 rebounds and 5 blocks for the winning side. American forward Marvin Jackson (195, college: St.Andrews, agency: Strategic Sports) came up with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds and Kristinn Olafsson (-88) added 17 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for Valur in the defeat. Four Valur players scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Haukar maintains eleventh place with 5-14 record. Valur lost their nineteenth game in a row. Newly promoted team still closes the standings. Haukar's next round opponent will be higher ranked IR (#9) in Reykjavik and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Valur's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Reykjavik KR.
