Round 7 in CIBACOPA means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Hermosillo where host Rayos de Hermosillo (6-1) beat league's leader Tijuana Zonkeys (5-1) 98-93 in overtime on Tuesday evening. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Tijuana Zonkeys. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The hosts trailed by 10 points after three quarters before their 27-17 charge, which allowed them to tie the game at the end of regular time and get a 5-point victory in overtime. Rayos de Hermosillo made 31-of-41 free shots (75.6 percent) during the game. Rayos de Hermosillo outrebounded Tijuana Zonkeys 43-32 including 32 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by Tijuana Zonkeys' players. 29 personal fouls committed by Tijuana Zonkeys helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The former international forward Jesus Lopez (205-83, college: SW Baptist) fired a double-double by scoring 20 points and 12 rebounds for the winners. Naturalized American point guard Steve Monreal (180-86, college: CS Monterey) chipped in 19 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. Rayos de Hermosillo's coach Dan Tacheny used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. The former international point guard Omar Quintero (183-81, college: S.Nazarene) produced 37 points (!!!) and the former international power forward Arim Solares (202-83) added 14 points and 9 rebounds respectively for lost side. Four Rayos de Hermosillo and five Tijuana Zonkeys players scored in double figures. Rayos de Hermosillo have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader. Tijuana Zonkeys at the other side dropped to the second place with one game lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Hermosillo. Tijuana Zonkeys will have a break next week, which should allow them to rest and make it back to the top of the standings. Rayos de Hermosillo will try to continue on its current victory against second ranked Tijuana Zonkeys at home.
