Undefeated Ventspils (14-1) recorded its first loss at the home court on Wednesday night. Hosts were defeated by third ranked VEF Riga (14-1) 77-66. The game was mostly controlled by VEF Riga. Ventspils managed to win second period 17-16. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Ventspils 34-23 including 21 on the defensive glass. The best player for the winners was American guard Curtis Millage (185-81, college: Arizona St.) who scored 12 points and 4 assists. Lithuanian center Antanas Kavaliauskas (208-84, college: Texas A&M, agency: Interperformances) chipped in 10 points and 7 rebounds. Four VEF Riga players scored in double figures. American guard Jahmar Young (196-86, college: N.Mexico St.) produced 22 points and 6 rebounds and the former international power forward Ronalds Zakis (207-87) added 12 points and 5 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Ventspils' coach Gundars Vetra rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. VEF Riga have an impressive eight-game winning streak. Defending champion moved-up to second place, which they share with defeated Ventspils. VEF Riga is looking forward to face Jurmala (#7) at home in the next round where they are favorite. Ventspils will play against the league's leader Liepaja (#1) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
