There was a surprise result in Galdakao where eleventh ranked Orion-GDKO (9-14) defeated higher ranked Casablanca (17-7) 64-58 on Saturday. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 23-13. But Casablanca won second period 15-13. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Orion-GDKO won last quarter 20-16. They made 19-of-25 free shots (76.0 percent) during the game. American swingman Katie Gearlds (186-84, college: Purdue) scored 25 points and 7 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and Argentinian power forward Erica Sanchez (184-76, agency: Players Group) chipped in 18 points and 8 rebounds during the contest. Center Marta Garcia (193-86) responded with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 10 rebounds (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) and guard Paula Palomares (170-84, agency: Josep and Nicolas) scored 19 points. Four Casablanca players scored in double figures. Orion-GDKO moved-up to tenth place in Group B, which they share with Gernika. Loser Casablanca dropped to the third position with seven games lost. Orion-GDKO will face Gernika (#10) on the road in the next round. Casablanca will play against Segle XXI (#14) in Barcelona.
