Regular Season Round 31: Gigantes - Guaiqueries 87-89

The most exciting game of round 31 in the LPB took place in Puerto Ordaz. This derby game ended with only two-point home defeat of 3rd placed Gigantes (17-12) to fifth ranked Guaiqueries (16-15) 89-87 on Saturday evening. Gigantes were tied after three quarters but could not keep up in the last quarter eventually losing the game. Guaiqueries held Gigantes to an opponent 0.0 percent shooting from the field compared to 0.0 percent accuracy of the winners. It was a great evening for the former international forward Hernan Salcedo (198-80) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds. The former international swingman Cesar Silva (190-81) helped adding 16 points and 6 rebounds. Five Guaiqueries players scored in double figures. Guaiqueries' coach Carlos Mercado used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. At the losing side point guard Elvis Baez (189-89) responded with 22 points and 5 rebounds and American swingman Blake Walker (197-82, college: Portland St.) scored 24 points. Guaiqueries maintains fifth place with 16-15 record. Gigantes lost third consecutive game. They keep the third position with 12 games lost. Guaiqueries will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Gigantes will play again at home against Guaiqueries in Porlamar and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
