Fifteenth-ranked Stade Clermont (8-22) gave a tough game to first ranked Charleville-Mezieres (23-7) on Saturday. Charleville-Mezieres managed to secure only twelve-point victory 96-84. However their fans expected much easier game. The game was mostly controlled by Charleville-Mezieres. Stade Clermont was better in third quarter 22-21. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening, at least not yet. The game turned upside-down in the last quarter, where Stade Clermont used huge pressure winning it 30-13 getting a tie at the end of regular time. They lost eventually overtime period 3-15. Charleville-Mezieres dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Stade Clermont's 34. Charleville-Mezieres forced 24 Stade Clermont turnovers and outrebounded them 46-34 including 32 on the defensive glass. Charleville-Mezieres looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Stade Clermont was plagued by 29 personal fouls down the stretch. Guard Fabien Calvez (187-84, college: Evansville) scored 25 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists to lead the charge for the winners and American forward Corey Belser (200-82, college: San Diego) chipped in 21 points and 11 rebounds during the contest. Four Charleville-Mezieres players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was Bulgarian swingman Simeon Naydenov (201-81, college: Louisville, agency: Global Sports Plaza) with 25 points and guard Bianco Matanga (188-87) scored 18 points. Stade Clermont's coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Charleville-Mezieres maintains first position with 23-7 record, which they share with St Quentin. Stade Clermont lost seventh consecutive game. They keep the fifteenth place with 22 games lost. Charleville-Mezieres will face league's second-placed Saint-Quentin on the road in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Stade Clermont will play against Sorgues (#8) and be promoted back to the ProB just one year after relegation.
