Regular Season Round 17: Cananea - Tijuana 90-86

There was a minor upset when 3rd placed Tijuana Zonkeys (11-5) lost on the road to sixth ranked Mineros de Cananea (8-9) 90-86 on Tuesday. Tijuana Zonkeys were trailing by 4 points at halftime but managed to get 8-point lead after three quarters before a 28-16 charge of Mineros de Cananea, which allowed them to win the game. American forward Derek Thomas (193-84, college: Appalachian St.) orchestrated the victory by scoring 23 points and 9 rebounds. His fellow American import guard Kwan Waller (180-89, college: Ky Wesleyan) contributed with 21 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. The former international point guard Omar Quintero (183-81, college: S.Nazarene) answered with 19 points and American forward Darnell Hugee (201-85, college: Prairie View A&M) added 19 points (perfect from the field making all seven shots !!!) in the effort for Tijuana Zonkeys. Four Tijuana Zonkeys players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Defending champion moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Culiacan. Loser Tijuana Zonkeys keep the third position with five games lost. Mineros de Cananea will face again higher ranked Tijuana Zonkeys (#3) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
