Eleventh-ranked Alghero (8-18) was very close to win a game against third ranked San Martino (19-6) in San Martino di L on Saturday. San Martino managed to secure only two-point victory 58-56. However their fans expected much easier game. Alghero was trailing by 8 points at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 11-10 charge of San Martino, which allowed them to tie the game at the end of regular time. They were better in double-overtime eventually winning that period 6-6. San Martino dominated on the defensive end, holding Alghero to just 7 points in second quarter. They made 19-of-23 free shots (82.6 percent) during the game. San Martino forced 20 Alghero turnovers and outrebounded them 45-33 including 30 on the defensive glass. Alghero was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international power forward Martina Sandri (185-88) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 10 points and 21 rebounds. Guard Maria Pegoraro (174-89) contributed with 10 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. San Martino's coach Jacopo Lodde used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Bulgarian power forward Radostina Slavova-Naneva (188-86) answered with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 13 rebounds and guard Elisa Donati (170-80) added 13 points in the effort for Alghero. San Martino have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain third place in North with 19-6 record having just two points less than leader Ragusa. Alghero lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the twelfth position with 18 games lost. San Martino will face Biassono (#13) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Alghero will play against Virtus Cagliari.
