Rather predictable result in Bertrange where second ranked Sparta (21-6) defeated 5th ranked Amicale (13-14) 85-79 on Friday. The game without a history. Sparta led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Sparta outrebounded Amicale 40-27 including a 30-18 advantage in defensive rebounds. The former international forward Larrie Smith (198-75, college: Tenn Tech) stepped up and scored 25 points and 9 rebounds for the winners and American-Nigerian power forward Ezenwa Ukeagu (203-81, college: Washington St.) chipped in 14 points and 13 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Four Sparta players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was Cameroonian forward Yves Mekongo (201-87, college: La Salle, agency: Dynamics Global Management) with 19 points and 9 rebounds and the former international guard Eric Jeitz (191-86) scored 22 points. Sparta maintains second place with 21-6 record having just two points less than leader Basket Esch. Amicale at the other side dropped to the fourth position with 14 games lost. Sparta will face Etzella (#6) in Ettelbruck in the next round. Amicale will play at home against Musel Pikes in Stadrbredimus and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
