Sixth-ranked Mineros de Cananea (18-18) made lots of trouble for third ranked Tijuana Zonkeys (25-11) on Wednesday. Tijuana Zonkeys managed to secure only seven-point victory 95-88. However their fans expected easier game. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Mineros de Cananea won third quarter 21-18. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening, at least not yet. The game turned upside-down in the last quarter, where Mineros de Cananea used huge pressure winning it 26-20 getting a tie at the end of regular time. They lost eventually overtime period 5-12. Tijuana Zonkeys had a 40-25 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. The game was dominated by American players. The best player for the winners was swingman Marcus Morrison (198-84, college: Middle Tenn.St.) who scored 25 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Power forward Robert Hornsby (196-82, college: Troy) chipped in a double-double by scoring 16 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists. Four Tijuana Zonkeys players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was forward Derek Thomas (193-84, college: Appalachian St.) who recorded a double-double by scoring 41 points (!!!) and 10 rebounds and forward Rodney Alexander (201-87, college: Oklahoma City) added 14 points and 13 rebounds respectively. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Tijuana Zonkeys have an impressive six-game winning streak. They maintain third position with 25-11 record having seven points less than leader Hermosillo. Mineros de Cananea lost fourth consecutive game. Defending champion dropped to the fourth place with 18 games lost. Tijuana Zonkeys will face Caballeros de Culiacan (#9) at home in the next round where they are favorite. Mineros de Cananea will play against the league's second-placed Ostioneros de Guaymas (#2) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
