Regular Season Round 3: Pioneros - Huracanes 97-81

There was no surprise when 12th ranked Huracanes (1-2) lost to leader Pioneros (3-0) in Cancun 81-97. The game without a history. Pioneros led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Huracanes' 36 and made 20-of-26 charity shots (76.9 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Huracanes 47-28 including a 15-1 advantage in offensive rebounds. Pioneros players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. It was a great evening for American forward Jeremis Smith (203-86, college: Georgia Tech) who led his team to a victory scoring 19 points and 6 rebounds. Jamaican-American point guard Akeem Scott (186-83, college: High Point) helped adding 14 points and 5 assists. Scott attended previously one of camps at Eurobasket Summer League on his way to pro basketball. The best for the losing side was American swingman Marcus Morrison (198-84, college: Middle Tenn.St.) with 19 points and 7 rebounds and the other American import swingman Denver Holmes (193, college: Evansville) scored 19 points. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Pioneros have a solid series of three victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with 3 other teams. Huracanes at the other side dropped to the eighth place with two games lost. They share the position with 5 other teams. Pioneros will play against Halcones Rojos (#7) in Veracruz in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Huracanes will play against Gansos to get more than just one victory in their record.
