Very predictable result when fifth ranked Abejas (5-2) edged on the road 11th ranked Guerreros (2-5) 92-90 on Saturday. Guerreros trailed by 12 points after 3 quarters before a 32-22 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 90-92 at the end of the game. Guerreros were plagued by 28 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a great evening for American-Jamaican forward McHugh Mattis (198-84, college: S.Florida) who led his team to a victory scoring 25 points and 8 rebounds. American forward Eugene Phelps (198, college: Long Beach St.) helped adding 18 points and 11 rebounds. At the losing side American point guard Michael Hunter (178, college: Cal-Irvine) responded with 24 points and American-Puerto Rican power forward Angel Alamo (206-85) scored 23 points and 6 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field). Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Guerreros' coach Marcelo Elusich tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Abejas have a solid series of four victories in a row. They moved-up to third place, which they share with 4 other teams. Newly promoted Guerreros dropped to the thirteenth position with five games lost. Abejas will face Soles (#10) in Mexicali in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Guerreros will play on the road against Halcones Rojos in Veracruz.
