Regular Season Round 9: Barreteros - Gigantes 107-87

Bottom-ranked Gigantes (0-9) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 107-87 loss to tenth ranked Barreteros (5-4) in Zacatecas on Saturday evening. The game was mostly controlled by Barreteros. Gigantes managed to win second period 25-20. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Barreteros dominated down low during the game scoring 68 of its points in the paint compared to Gigantes' 40 and made 18-of-23 free shots (78.3 percent) during the game. Barreteros forced 20 Gigantes turnovers. American guard Lamont Sumpter (183-86, college: McMurry) stepped up and scored 30 points, 5 assists and 4 steals for the winners and his fellow American import guard Jason Horton (188-86, college: Missouri) chipped in 20 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Horton is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. Barreteros' coach Andres Contreras used an eleven-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. The best for the losing side was British V.Islands-Vincentian center John Gardiner (203-83, college: Sam Houston St.) with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 12 rebounds and American guard Sam Liggins (178, college: Alders.-Broad.) scored 27 points. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Barreteros moved-up to seventh place, which they share with 3 other teams. Newly promoted Gigantes still closes the standings with nine games lost. They share the position with Gansos. Barreteros will meet at home league's leader Halcones UV Xalapa in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Gigantes will play against Guerreros (#13) and look forward to get finally their first victory.
