Everything could happen in Aguascalientes at the game between two tied teams. Both third ranked Halcones Rojos and one of their biggest challengers Panteras had identical 7-2 record. But Panteras were not able to use a home court advantage and were edged by the opponent from Veracruz 84-83 on Thursday night. The guests trailed by 5 points after three quarters before their 23-17 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Halcones Rojos made 27-of-34 free shots (79.4 percent) during the game. Strangely Panteras outrebounded Halcones Rojos 37-25 including 24 on the defensive glass. Panteras were plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a very good performance for Spanish center Ruben Ruiz (208-76) who helped to win the game recording 25 points. The former international forward Noe Alonzo (200-83, college: Grand Canyon) contributed with 17 points for the winners. Four Halcones Rojos players scored in double figures. American power forward Lee Nailon (205-75, college: TCU) replied with 19 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists (made all of his seven free throws) and Puerto Rican point guard Ricardo Melendez (179-83) added 22 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in the effort for Panteras. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Halcones Rojos have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain third position with 8-2 record behind leader Halc.Xalapa. Loser Panteras keep the fourth place with three games lost. Halcones Rojos will face Barreteros (#10) in Zacatecas in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Panteras will play at home against the league's leader Halcones UV Xalapa (#1).
