Regular Season Round 11: Barreteros - Halc.Rojos 85-82

Very important is a road loss of third ranked Halcones Rojos (8-3) against tenth ranked Barreteros (6-5) on Saturday night. Visiting Halcones Rojos were edged by Barreteros in a tough game in Zacatecas 82-85. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Halcones Rojos. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Halcones Rojos won third quarter 16-15. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Barreteros made 29-of-33 free shots (87.9 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was American guard Jason Horton (188-86, college: Missouri) who scored 25 points. His fellow American import guard Lamont Sumpter (183-86, college: McMurry) chipped in 15 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists (was perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line !!!). Horton is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Five Barreteros players scored in double figures. Venezuelan power forward Luis Bethelmy (200-86) produced 16 points and 7 rebounds and the former international forward Noe Alonzo (200-83, college: Grand Canyon) added 21 points respectively for the guests. Halcones Rojos' coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Barreteros moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Corr.Victoria and Pioneros. Loser Halcones Rojos keep the third position with three games lost. Barreteros will meet higher ranked Abejas (#6) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Halcones Rojos will play against Correcaminos in Ciudad Victoria and hope to secure a win.
