There was no surprise when bottom-ranked Niigata Albirex (0-2) lost at home to leader Iwate Big Bulls (2-0) 94-85 on Sunday. Niigata Albirex was trailing by 5 points at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 31-21 charge of Iwate Big Bulls, which allowed them to win the game. They also forced 19 Niigata Albirex turnovers. Strangely Niigata Albirex outrebounded Iwate Big Bulls 36-20 including 23 on the defensive glass. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Iwate Big Bulls made 11 blocks. It was a very good performance for American forward Lawrence Blackledge (206-86, college: Marquette, agency: Top Notch Sports) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 15 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 10 blocks. Guard Kenichi Takahashi (181-80) contributed with 20 points and 5 assists (perfect from the field making all six shots) for the winners. Blackledge is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Iwate Big Bulls' coach Dai Oketani used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American guard Nile Murry (193-83, college: TCU) answered with 21 points and 7 rebounds and the other American import power forward Chris Holm (212-84, college: Vermont, agency: Top Notch Sports) added 13 points and 12 rebounds in the effort for Niigata Albirex. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Iwate Big Bulls maintains first place with 2-0 record, which they share with Toyama Grouses and Okinawa GK.
