Very expected game in Cancun where 16th ranked Gigantes (1-11) were rolled over by eighth ranked Pioneros (7-5) 94-71 on Thursday. It was a very close game until the last quarter, when Pioneros's pressure prevailed and they won that period 30-11 extending their advantage to 23 points. They dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Gigantes' 36. Pioneros forced 23 Gigantes turnovers and outrebounded them 48-31 including a 21-6 advantage in offensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was the former international guard Forrest Fisher (193-80) who scored 26 points and 5 rebounds. Jamaican-American point guard Akeem Scott (186-83, college: High Point) chipped in 18 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Worth to mention Scott played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped get the job in pro basketball. Coach Josep Claros's team controlled all game and the coach could let to play 10 players and allowed the starting five to rest. At the other side the best for losing team was American power forward John Ruffus (207-81, college: Fayetteville St.) who recorded a double-double by scoring 20 points and 10 rebounds and his fellow American import guard Adam Morris (185, college: Tex.A&M-Kingsv.) added 13 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists respectively. Four Gigantes players scored in double figures. Pioneros moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Panteras. Newly promoted Gigantes stay at the bottom position with 11 games lost. Pioneros will face Osos (#14) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Gigantes will play against Soles in Mexicali.
