There was a minor upset in Perth where bottom-ranked Sydney Uni Flames (0-3) were defeated by ninth ranked West Coast Waves (1-1) 78-70 on Friday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Sydney Uni Flames won third quarter 21-13. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. West Coast Waves dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Sydney Uni Flames' 32. West Coast Waves looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The best player for the winners was the former international guard Deanna Smith (179-80) who scored 23 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. New Zealand forward Antonia Edmondson (181-87) chipped in 14 points and 6 rebounds. West Coast Waves' coach Kennedy Kereama used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. Guard Kate Ebzery (177-90) produced 27 points and 5 assists and international guard Alicia Poto (166-78) added 18 points and 7 rebounds respectively for the guests. West Coast Waves left bottom position moving up to third place, which they share with 3 other teams. Loser Sydney Uni Flames still closes the standings with three games lost. West Coast Waves will face Dandenong Rangers (#4) on the road in the next round. Sydney Uni Flames will play against Bulleen Boomers (#8) in Melbourne and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
