Regular Season Round 1: Gernika - Pais Vasco 64-62

A very interesting game took place in Gernika. It ended with only two-point defeat on the road of bottom-ranked Pais Vasco (0-1) to leader Gernika (1-0) 64-62 on Saturday evening. Host team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. It was a key game for the top position in Group B. It looked good early as Pais Vasco took an 2-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Gernika had a 19-11 second period charge getting the lead and Pais Vasco was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 62-64. They outrebounded Pais Vasco 40-29 including 28 on the defensive glass. Bulgarian forward Evelina Guneva (183-80, agency: Interperformances) fired a double-double by scoring 11 points and 13 rebounds for the winners. Power forward Nerea Moreno (185-88) chipped in 9 points and 8 rebounds. Gernika's coach Mario Lopez allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American center Stephanie Madden (185-88, college: Langston) produced 17 points and 6 rebounds and point guard Maria Gomez (170-82) added 12 points and 8 rebounds respectively for lost side. Gernika keeps a position of Group B leader, which they share with 5 other teams. Pais Vasco at the other side still closes the standings with one game lost. Gernika's next round opponent will be Las Rozas (#8) on the road and are hoping to win another game. Pais Vasco will play against the league's leader Fundal Alcobendas.
