Very expected game in Veracruz where 7th ranked Abejas (8-7) were defeated by third ranked Halcones Rojos (12-3) 77-63 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Halcones Rojos. Abejas managed to win second period 22-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Halcones Rojos dominated down low during the game scoring 46 of its points in the paint compared to Abejas' 22. The best player for the winners was Venezuelan power forward Luis Bethelmy (200-86) who scored 17 points and 8 rebounds. The former international guard Francisco Cruz (190-89, college: Wyoming) chipped in 7 points and 7 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was American forward Eugene Phelps (198, college: Long Beach St.) who recorded a double-double by scoring 19 points and 10 rebounds and American-Jamaican forward McHugh Mattis (198-84, college: S.Florida) added 12 points and 9 rebounds respectively. Four Abejas players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Halcones Rojos. They maintain third place with 12-3 record having just two points less than leader Halc.Xalapa. Abejas lost their third game in a row. They keep the seventh position with seven games lost. They share it with Barreteros. Halcones Rojos will meet league's leader Halcones UV Xalapa on the road in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Abejas will play against Lechugueros (#12) in Leon and hope to secure a win.
