The game between third ranked Halcones Rojos (12-5) and seventh ranked Abejas (10-7) was the most important one in the last round on Thursday night. Halcones Rojos were defeated by Abejas in Guanajuato 85-98. The game was mostly controlled by Abejas. Halcones Rojos managed to win third quarter 25-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Abejas dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Halcones Rojos' 34. 25 personal fouls committed by Halcones Rojos helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American forward Eugene Phelps (198, college: Long Beach St.) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 30 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. His fellow American import forward Steffphon Pettigrew (195, college: W.Kentucky) contributed with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Four Abejas players scored in double figures. Venezuelan power forward Luis Bethelmy (200-86) answered with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists and Spanish center Ruben Ruiz (208-76) added 22 points (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) in the effort for Halcones Rojos. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Abejas moved-up to fifth place, which they share with 3 other teams. Halcones Rojos at the other side dropped to the fourth position with five games lost. Abejas is looking forward to face Huracanes (#9) in Tampico in the next round. Halcones Rojos will play on the road against Lechugueros (#12) in Leon and are hoping to win this game.
