LNBP top team - Halcones UV Xalapa (17-1) managed to deliver another win on Saturday. This time they beat seventh ranked Abejas (10-8) in Guanajuato 97-88. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Abejas. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 28-20. But Abejas won second period 27-25. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. International guard Orlando Mendez-Valdez (185-86, college: W.Kentucky) scored 23 points and 6 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) to lead the charge for the winners and American guard LeRoy Hickerson (196-82, college: Cumberlands) chipped in 19 points and 9 rebounds during the contest. Five Halcones UV Xalapa players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was American forward Eugene Phelps (198, college: Long Beach St.) with a double-double by scoring 31 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists and his fellow American import forward Steffphon Pettigrew (195, college: W.Kentucky) scored 24 points and 8 rebounds (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field). Halcones UV Xalapa have an impressive 11-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 17-1 record. Abejas at the other side keep the seventh place with eight games lost. They share the position with Barreteros. Halcones UV Xalapa are looking forward to face Correcaminos (#11) in Ciudad Victoria in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Abejas will play on the road against Panteras (#5) in Aguascalientes and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
