Regular Season Round 3: Taranto - Orvieto 74-47

There was a change at the A1 leadership position after last games. Round 3 most important game was a defeat of league's leader Orvieto (2-1). They were crushed by eighth ranked Taranto (2-1) 74-47 on Sunday night. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Orvieto. It was a key game for the second position in the league. The game without a history. Taranto led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Orvieto to just 7 points in second quarter. Taranto made 18-of-19 free shots (94.7 percent) during the game. They also forced 25 Orvieto turnovers and outrebounded them 35-17 including a 24-11 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a great evening for Lithuanian center Gintare Petronyte (196-89) who led her team to a victory scoring 21 points and 8 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). American forward Megan Mahoney (183-83, college: Kansas St., agency: LBM Management) helped adding 10 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Taranto's coach Roberto Ricchini felt very confident using 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was American center Shamela Hampton (191-87, college: UNLV) with 15 points and Polish center Patrycja Gulak-Lipka (192-82, college: Massachusetts) scored 8 points. Defending champion moved-up to second place, which they share with 3 other teams including defeated Orvieto. Orvieto will play next round against league's leader Umbertide trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Taranto will try to continue on its current victory against eleventh ranked Priolo on the road.
