Regular Season Round 7: Sparta - Etzella 84-68

There was a change at the Diekirch League leadership position after last games. The most important game of round 7 took place in Bertrange between two undefeated teams where Sparta beat Etzella (6-1) 84-68 on Sunday night. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of Etzella. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The hosts trailed by 12 points at the halftime before their 55-27 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Sparta dominated on the defensive end, holding Etzella to just 6 points in third quarter. It was a great evening for the former international forward Larrie Smith (198-75, college: Tenn Tech) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists. Swingman Julien Hublart (192-88) helped adding 25 points and 8 rebounds (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field). Four Sparta players scored in double figures. At the losing side American power forward Anthony Simpson (203-87, college: Kent St.) responded with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 17 rebounds and the former international swingman Nelson Delgado (188-80) scored 16 points. Etzella's coach Amadeo Dias rotated ten players seeing no chance for a win. Sparta (7-0) have an impressive series of seven victories in a row. Defending champion (7-0) keeps a position of league leader. Etzella at the other side dropped to the second place with one game lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Sparta. Etzella will play next round against Residence trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Sparta will try to continue on its current victory against tenth ranked Black Star in Mersch.
