Not a big story in a game in Cancun where 7th ranked Abejas (12-11) were defeated by fifth ranked Pioneros (16-7) 81-73 on Thursday. Abejas trailed by 12 points after 3 quarters before a 25-21 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 73-81 at the end of the game. Pioneros made 17-of-22 free shots (77.3 percent) during the game. They also forced 20 Abejas turnovers. It was a great evening for the former international forward Stephen Soriano (201-84, college: Colorado Mesa) who led his team to a victory scoring 21 points and 5 rebounds (perfect from the field making all six shots). American point guard Jeremiah Dominguez (168-85, college: Portland St.) helped adding 17 points and 4 assists. Pioneros' coach Josep Claros used a ten-player rotation saving starting five for next games. American-Jamaican forward McHugh Mattis (198-84, college: S.Florida) responded with a double-double by scoring 15 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks and American forward Steffphon Pettigrew (195-89, college: W.Kentucky) scored 17 points and 5 rebounds. Four Abejas players scored in double figures. The victory was the seventh consecutive win for Pioneros. They maintain fifth place with 16-7 record. Abejas at the other side dropped to the eighth position with 11 games lost. Pioneros will meet at home Lechugueros (#13) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Abejas will play against the league's second-placed Soles (#2) in Mexicali and hope to secure a win.
