There was a minor upset when higher ranked Unicaja Malaga (5-3) was defeated at home by eleventh ranked Asefa Estudiantes (5-3) 85-74 on Sunday. Unicaja Malaga was trailing by 4 points at halftime but managed to get 2-point lead after three quarters before a 25-12 charge of Asefa Estudiantes, which allowed them to win the game. They made 28-of-32 free shots (87.5 percent) during the game. Unicaja Malaga was plagued by 30 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was center German Gabriel (207-80) who scored 19 points. Uruguayan-Italian guard Jayson Granger (186-89) chipped in 16 points. Granger is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four Asefa Estudiantes players scored in double figures. American guard Marcus Williams (191-85, college: Connecticut) produced 11 points and 8 rebounds and guard Txemi Urtasun (193-84, agency: Interperformances) added 15 points respectively for the hosts. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Asefa Estudiantes moved-up to fifth place, which they share with 6 other teams including defeated Unicaja Malaga. Asefa Estudiantes will face bottom-ranked Assignia Manresa (#18) on the road in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Unicaja Malaga will play against Caja Laboral (#10) in Vitoria.
