Third-ranked Toros (19-6) gave a tough game to first ranked Halcones UV Xalapa (23-2) on Thursday. Halcones UV Xalapa managed to secure only four-point victory 99-95. However their fans expected easier game. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Toros. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 30-19. But Toros won second period 25-23. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening, at least not yet. The game turned upside-down in the last quarter, where Toros used huge pressure winning it 19-17 getting a tie at the end of regular time. They lost eventually overtime period 4-8. Halcones UV Xalapa looked well-organized offensively handing out 31 assists. American guard LeRoy Hickerson (196-82, college: Cumberlands) stepped up and scored 27 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists for the winners and the former international center Lorenzo Mata (205-86) chipped in 17 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). At the losing side American-Nigerian forward Ike Ofoegbu (205-85, college: SMU) responded with 23 points (made all of his eight free throws) and American swingman Rene Rougeau (198-86, college: UNLV, agency: ProSportsCareers) scored 18 points and 4 assists (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Four Halcones UV Xalapa and five Toros players scored in double figures. Halcones UV Xalapa have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain first place with 23-2 record. Toros at the other side keep the third position with six games lost. Halcones UV Xalapa will face Fuerza Regia (#7) in Monterrey in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Toros will play on the road against Halcones Rojos (#4) in Veracruz and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
