Very expected game when 5th ranked UNBC (3-5) lost to leader Calgary (8-0) in Exshaw 78-91 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Calgary. UNBC was better in fourth quarter 21-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to UNBC's 28. Calgary forced 29 UNBC turnovers and outrebounded them 43-28 including a 20-9 advantage in offensive rebounds. Forward Jessica Franz (183) orchestrated the victory by scoring 19 points and 6 rebounds. Guard Megan Schaufele (165-90) contributed with 15 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Mercedes Van Koughnett answered with 16 points and 4 assists and Kady Dandeneau added 18 points in the effort for UNBC. Four Calgary and five UNBC players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. The victory was the eighth consecutive win for Calgary. They maintain first place with 8-0 record, which they share with UFV. UNBC lost their third game in a row. They keep the fifth position with five games lost. Calgary will have a break next round. UNBC will play at home against Alberta (#3) in Edmonton and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
