Regular Season Round 12: Memorial - New Brunsw. 79-89

Bottom-ranked Sea Hawks (0-8) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 89-79 loss to fifth ranked Varsity Reds (3-3) in St.John's, NL on Sunday evening. The guests trailed by 1 point at the halftime before their 24-12 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Varsity Reds looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Varsity Reds made 7 blocks. Sea Hawks were plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was Matthew Daley (175) who scored 27 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals. Guard Daniel Quirion (183) chipped in 13 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Five Varsity Reds players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was swingman Ryan Wood (191) who recorded 23 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists and guard Theodore Stanoev (180) added 13 points and 4 assists (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) respectively. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Varsity Reds maintains fifth position with 3-3 record, which they share with York. Loser Sea Hawks still closes the standings with eight games lost. Varsity Reds will face league's second-placed Capers in Sydney, NS in the next round and it may be quite challenging game.
