The most surprising game was a loss of top-ranked Halcones UV Xalapa (24-3) in Cancun on Thursday night. Visitors were defeated by sixth ranked Pioneros (19-8) 87-79. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Halcones UV Xalapa. The hosts trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 6-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 87-79. Pioneros made 26-of-34 free shots (76.5 percent) during the game. Pioneros outrebounded Halcones UV Xalapa 42-29 including 28 on the defensive glass. 29 personal fouls committed by Halcones UV Xalapa helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a good game for American power forward Mike Williams (201-85, college: Cincinnati) who led his team to a victory with 32 points and 8 rebounds. His fellow American import forward Jeremis Smith (203-86, college: Georgia Tech) contributed with 13 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. International guard Orlando Mendez-Valdez (185-86, college: W.Kentucky) answered with 29 points and 7 rebounds and American forward Devon Pearson (198-84, college: SMU) added 15 points in the effort for Halcones UV Xalapa. Four Halcones UV Xalapa players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Pioneros moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Panteras. Halcones UV Xalapa at the other side still keeps top position with three games lost. Pioneros is looking forward to face higher ranked Halcones Rojos (#4) in Veracruz in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Halcones UV Xalapa will play on the road against the league's second-placed Soles in Mexicali and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
