There was a minor upset when 3rd placed Laurentian (3-4) was outscored by sixth ranked Thunderwolves (2-4) in Thunder Bay 73-48 on Friday. The game without a history. Thunderwolves led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Laurentian to just 6 points in third quarter. Thunderwolves held Laurentian to an opponent 23.9 percent shooting from the field compared to 39.2 percent accuracy of the winners. They outrebounded Laurentian 51-36 including a 32-20 advantage in defensive rebounds. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Thunderwolves made 7 blocks. It was a very good performance for guard Ayse Kalkan (173-91) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 15 points and 14 rebounds. Guard Carolyn Fragale (168-89) contributed with 20 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Forward Adrienne Moreau (175) answered with 9 points and 8 rebounds and Sasha Polishchuk added 5 points and 7 rebounds in the effort for Laurentian. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Thunderwolves maintains sixth place with 2-4 record, which they share with McMaster. Loser Laurentian dropped to the fourth position with four games lost. Thunderwolves will face York (#7) in Toronto in the next round. Laurentian will play on the road against Guelph and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
