Regular Season Round 12: Valur - Grindavik 81-79

The most exciting game of round 12 in the Express L. took place in Reykjavik. This derby game ended with only two-point defeat on the road of 6th ranked Grindavik (3-9) to fourth ranked Valur (6-6) 81-79 on Saturday evening. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Grindavik won fourth quarter 25-21. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Valur made 23-of-30 free shots (76.7 percent) during the game. They also forced 21 Grindavik turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. It was a good game for the former international forward Kristrun Sigurjonsdottir (176-85) who led her team to a victory with 35 points (!!!) and 6 rebounds (went 10 for 10 at the free throw line !!!). American forward Alberta Auguste (180-85, college: Tennessee) contributed with a double-double by scoring 16 points, 19 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 steals for the winners. Valur's coach Agust Bjorgvinsson used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. American guard Crystal Smith (168-84, college: Iowa) replied with a double-double by scoring 31 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals and the former international forward Petrunella Skuladottir (177-85) added 20 points and 7 rebounds in the effort for Grindavik. Valur maintains fourth position with 6-6 record. Newly promoted Grindavik keeps the sixth place with nine games lost. They share the position with Njardvik. Valur are looking forward to face league's leader Keflavik on the road in the next round and it may be the game of the week. Grindavik will play against Fjolnir (#8) in Reykjavik and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
