Regular Season Round 9: Taipans - Hawks 76-66

Very important is a road loss of second ranked Wollongong Hawks (7-2) against sixth ranked Cairns Taipans (4-6) on Sunday night. Visiting Wollongong Hawks were defeated by Cairns Taipans in Cairns 76-66. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Wollongong Hawks. It looked good early as Wollongong Hawks took an 3-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Cairns Taipans had a 23-13 second period charge getting the lead and Wollongong Hawks were not able to take back game control losing it eventually 66-76. They outrebounded Wollongong Hawks 42-24 including a 29-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a good game for American point guard Jamar Wilson (185-84, college: Albany) who led his team to a victory with 11 points and 8 assists. International power forward Cameron Tragardh (209-83, college: ORU) contributed with 10 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Cairns Taipans' coach Aaron Fearne used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Guard Rhys Martin (193-86, college: Nova SE) answered with 15 points and 7 assists and the former international swingman Glen Saville (197-76) added 15 points in the effort for Wollongong Hawks. Four Wollongong Hawks players scored in double figures. Cairns Taipans maintains sixth place with 4-6 record. Wollongong Hawks at the other side keep the second position with two games lost. Cairns Taipans will have a break next round. Wollongong Hawks will play on the road against Perth Wildcats and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
