Very expected game in Veracruz where 16th ranked Gigantes (2-28) were defeated by fourth ranked Halcones Rojos (23-7) 86-68 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Halcones Rojos. Gigantes managed to win third quarter 20-14. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Halcones Rojos won last quarter 26-9. They dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Gigantes' 30. Halcones Rojos forced 22 Gigantes turnovers. Venezuelan power forward Luis Bethelmy (200-86) had a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) to lead the charge for the winners and American forward Leroy Davis (200-81, college: Georgia St.) chipped in 19 points during the contest. Five Halcones Rojos players scored in double figures. Halcones Rojos' coach Eddie Casiano used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was American forward Jermaine Johnson (201-85, college: Charleston, agency: Interperformances) with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds and his fellow American import forward Antonio Grant (198-76, college: S.Carolina, agency: Interperformances) scored 17 points and 5 rebounds. Halcones Rojos have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to third place, which they share with Toros. Gigantes lost fourteenth consecutive game. Newly promoted team stay dead last with 28 lost games. Halcones Rojos will meet at home Pioneros (#6) in the next round. Gigantes will play against Correcaminos (#11) in Ciudad Victoria and hope to secure a win.
