Very expected game when 7th ranked Ironi Ashkelon (4-6) lost on the road to third ranked Maccabi Haifa (7-3) 111-94 on Sunday. The game was mostly controlled by Maccabi Haifa. Ironi Ashkelon was better in third quarter 24-22. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Maccabi Haifa dominated down low during the game scoring 68 of its points in the paint compared to Ironi Ashkelon's 40 and made 22-of-29 free shots (75.9 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Ironi Ashkelon 38-25 including a 28-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. Maccabi Haifa looked well-organized offensively handing out 31 assists comparing to just 13 passes made by Ironi Ashkelon's players. Quite impressive performance for American-Greek swingman Pat Calathes (208-85, college: St.Joseph's) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 27 points and 12 rebounds. American Donta Smith (201-83, college: SE Illinois JC) contributed with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists for the winners. American swingman Julien Mills (193-85, college: Ball St.) replied with 25 points and 6 rebounds (made all of his seven free throws) and his fellow American import guard Marcus Moore (198-80, college: Washington St., agency: Laszlo Vinko Group) added 17 points in the effort for Ironi Ashkelon. Five Maccabi Haifa and four Ironi Ashkelon players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Maccabi Haifa moved-up to second place, which they share with Hapoel Eilat. Loser Ironi Ashkelon dropped to the eighth position with six games lost. Maccabi Haifa will face Maccabi Rishon (#7) in Rishon Le-Zion in the next round where they are favorite. Ironi Ashkelon will play at home against Galil Gilboa in Rosh Pina.
