There was no surprise in Guanajuato where 9th ranked Abejas (19-19) were defeated by third ranked Halcones Rojos (30-8) 88-84 on Saturday. The guests trailed by 1 point at the halftime before their 26-15 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Halcones Rojos dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Abejas' 38. The former international guard Francisco Cruz (190-89, college: Wyoming) scored 22 points and 5 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and American guard Curtis Stinson (191-83, college: Iowa St.) chipped in 16 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists during the contest. American forward Eugene Phelps (198, college: Long Beach St.) responded with 22 points and 6 rebounds and American-Jamaican forward McHugh Mattis (198-84, college: S.Florida) scored 16 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Four Halcones Rojos and five Abejas players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Halcones Rojos have an impressive seven-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place. Abejas lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the ninth position with 19 games lost. Halcones Rojos will meet at home bottom-ranked Gigantes (#16) in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Abejas will play against Soles (#3) in Mexicali and hope to secure a win.
