There was no surprise in Taiyuan where 7th ranked Liaoning Hunters (12-11) were defeated by fifth ranked Shanxi Zhongyu (14-10) 119-114 on Sunday. The hosts trailed by 2 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 6-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 119-114. Shanxi Zhongyu shot 62.7 percent from the field. Strangely Liaoning Hunters outrebounded Shanxi Zhongyu 52-35 including a 35-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Shanxi Zhongyu made 10 blocks. Liaoning Hunters were plagued by 30 personal fouls down the stretch. Forward Jia Xien (198-89) fired 39 points (!!!), 8 rebounds and 5 blocks (made all of his seven free throws) for the winners. American forward Charles Gaines (201-81, college: S.Mississippi) chipped in a double-double by scoring 16 points and 13 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Five Shanxi Zhongyu players scored in double figures. The former international center XiaoXu Li (206-90) produced a double-double by scoring 25 points and 22 rebounds and Nigerian-American point guard Josh-Emmanuel Akognon (180-86, college: CS Fullerton) added 34 points (!!!) and 6 rebounds respectively for lost side. Liaoning Hunters' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Shanxi Zhongyu moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Xinjiang FT. Liaoning Hunters lost their fourth game in a row. They keep the seventh position with 11 games lost. Shanxi Zhongyu will face higher ranked Beijing Ducks (#3) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Liaoning Hunters will play against Zhejiang Guangsha Lions (#6) in Hangzhou and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
