Eighth-ranked Hondarribia-Irun (5-9) used its home court advantage to challenge second ranked Perfumerias Avenida (11-2) on Saturday. The visitors from Salamanca managed to secure only three-point victory 81-78. However their fans expected much easier game. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 24-10. But Hondarribia-Irun won second period 16-14. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Perfumerias Avenida dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Hondarribia-Irun's 36. They outrebounded Hondarribia-Irun 36-23 including 25 on the defensive glass. It was a good game for the former international swingman Marta Fernandez (178-81) who led her team to a victory with 18 points and 6 assists. American swingman Monique Currie (183-83, college: Duke) contributed with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Five Perfumerias Avenida players scored in double figures. American guard Italee Lucas (172-89, college: N.Carolina) answered with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists and point guard Ana Suarez (170-87, agency: Josep and Nicolas) added 16 points and 6 assists in the effort for Hondarribia-Irun. Perfumerias Avenida have an impressive series of eight victories in a row. They maintain second place with 11-2 record having just three points less than leader Rivas Ecopolis. Hondarribia-Irun at the other side dropped to the ninth position with nine games lost. Perfumerias Avenida are looking forward to face Argon Uni Girona (#3) on the road in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Hondarribia-Irun will play against Gran Canaria (#8) in Las Palmas and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
