We should mention about the upset which took place in Sao Paulo, where higher ranked Minas (12-11) lost to sixteenth ranked Palmeiras (5-17) in a road game 87-96. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Minas. It looked good early as Minas took an 3-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Palmeiras had a 30-22 second period charge getting the lead and Minas was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 87-96. Palmeiras brought some defensive toughness making 12 blocks. 25 personal fouls committed by Minas helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The winners were led by American guard Caleb Brown (182-87, college: Austin Peay St.) who scored that evening 23 points and the other American import forward Tyrone Curnell (203-88, college: Valdosta St.) supported him with 22 points and 5 blocks. Five Palmeiras players scored in double figures. Even 27 points (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line) by the former international swingman Betinho Nardi Duarte (195-88) did not help to save the game for Minas. American guard Jermaine Beal (191-87, college: Vanderbilt) added 22 points and 6 assists. Palmeiras maintains sixteenth position with 5-17 record. Minas at the other side dropped to the ninth place with 11 games lost. Palmeiras' next round opponent will be higher ranked Sao Jose/Vinac (#7) on the road and they do not belong to the favorites in that game.
