Very expected game when 8th ranked Ikaros (6-11) was smashed by second ranked Panathinaikos (14-3) in Athens 97-72 on Sunday. The game was mostly controlled by Panathinaikos. Ikaros managed to win fourth quarter 18-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Panathinaikos shot 60.3 percent from the field. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists comparing to just 14 passes made by Ikaros' players. The former international guard Dimitris Diamantidis (196-80) nailed 14 points and 7 assists for the winning side and the former international center Sofoklis Schortsanitis (206-85) accounted for 11 points and 4 assists. Senegalese forward Mouhammad Faye (208-85, college: SMU) came up with 18 points and 8 rebounds and guard Alexis Kiritsis (198-82) added 17 points and 7 assists respectively for Ikaros in the defeat. Five Panathinaikos and four Ikaros players scored in double figures. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Panathinaikos maintains second place with 14-3 record having just two points less than leader Olympiacos, which they share with Panionios. Ikaros lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the eighth position with 11 games lost. They share it with Kolossos. Panathinaikos' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Athens to the arena Ilysiakos.
