The biggest surprise of round 17 was guest Maccabi Haifa's (10-7) road victory over GreenTops Netanya (#5) 79-68 on Monday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of GreenTops Netanya. GreenTops Netanya was trailing by 5 points at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 24-12 charge of Maccabi Haifa, which allowed them to win the game. They made 20-of-26 free shots (76.9 percent) during the game. Maccabi Haifa outrebounded GreenTops Netanya 42-27 including 29 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. 25 personal fouls committed by GreenTops Netanya helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The game was dominated by American players. The best player for the winners was power forward James Thomas (205-80, college: Texas) who had a double-double by scoring 12 points and 14 rebounds. Donta Smith (201-83, college: SE Illinois JC) chipped in 20 points and 5 rebounds. Maccabi Haifa's coach Brad Greenberg used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Swingman Deron Washington (201-85, college: Virginia Tech) produced 16 points and 8 rebounds and power forward Marco Killingsworth (203-82, college: Indiana, agency: Avi Zilberman) added 15 points and 8 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Maccabi Haifa moved-up to second place, which they share with Hapoel J-M and Hapoel Eilat. GreenTops Netanya at the other side keeps the fifth position with eight games lost. Maccabi Haifa is looking forward to face Maccabi Ashdod (#8) at home in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. GreenTops Netanya will play against Galil Gilboa in Rosh Pina and is hoping to prove to their supporters that the loss was just an accident.
