Regular Season Round 26: Minas - Pinheiros/Sky 101-75

There was an upset in Belo Horizonte where higher ranked Pinheiros (15-8) was rolled over by ninth ranked Minas (13-12) 101-75 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Minas. Pinheiros was better in third quarter 20-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They made 31-of-32 free shots (96.9 percent) during the game, while Pinheiros only scored twelve points from the stripe. They outrebounded Pinheiros 38-20 including a 28-14 advantage in defensive rebounds. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Minas made 9 blocks. The best player for the winners was American guard Jermaine Beal (191-87, college: Vanderbilt) who scored 21 points and 5 rebounds (was perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line !!!). The other American import center Paul Crosby (203, college: Miss.Valley St.) chipped in 13 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Five Minas players scored in double figures. Minas' coach Raul Filho felt very confident that he used 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Naturalized American Shamell Stallworth (195-80, college: USF, agency: Interperformances) produced 21 points and 4 assists and American Joe Smith (192-77, college: Al.-Huntsville) added 25 points respectively for the guests. Minas maintains ninth position with 13-12 record. Pinheiros at the other side keeps the fifth place with eight games lost. Minas will face Vila Velha (#15) at home in the next round where they are favorite. Pinheiros will play against Joinville (#14).
